I am running for Canyon County Coroner because I want to continue serving my community with compassion, dignity, and respect during one of the most difficult times a family can face, the loss of a loved one. I believe the coroner’s office plays a critical role not only in determining cause and manner of death, but also in supporting families with professionalism and care. I am committed to ensuring that every case is handled with integrity, sensitivity, and the highest standards of service. I bring over 17 years of medicolegal death investigation experience, which has given me a deep understanding of case management, workload demands, and the growing complexities associated with increasing population and case volume. This experience has prepared me to anticipate trends, prioritize effectively, and make sound decisions under pressure while maintaining thorough and accurate investigations. In addition to my field experience, I hold a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with an emphasis in crime scene investigation. This education has equipped me with the skills to properly collect and analyze evidence, accurately document scenes, and assist in determining cause and manner of death. It has also strengthened my critical thinking abilities and prepared me to handle complex or ambiguous cases while collaborating effectively with law enforcement and medical professionals. I am also certified by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI), which reflects my commitment to nationally recognized best practices, continuing education, and maintaining the highest level of professionalism. This certification helps ensure that, even as caseloads grow, quality and credibility remain at the forefront of operations. Additionally, my eight years of service in the United States Army instilled in me the core values of loyalty, respect, duty, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. These principles guide my work and reinforce my commitment to maintaining the highest moral and ethical standards in this role. Overall, my combination of extensive experience, professional certification, education, and dedication to public service has prepared me to effectively lead the Canyon County Coroner’s Office while upholding the trust and confidence of the community.

I have lived and worked in Canyon County for the past 22 years. Although I spent eight of those years serving in the military, I made the intentional decision to return to Nampa to raise my children and continue serving this community. My career with Canyon County began in a temporary role and grew into a full-time position, where I quickly learned the importance of setting goals and committing to continuous personal and professional growth. Over the years, both my professional and personal experiences have deeply shaped my understanding of this community and the people within it. As a wife, mother, grandmother, and longtime community member, I have shared many of the same life experiences as the residents I serve. Including the loss of loved ones. These experiences have given me a genuine sense of empathy and perspective, reinforcing the importance of treating every individual with compassion, dignity, and respect during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. I believe these qualities are not something that can simply be taught in a classroom but are developed through lived experience and a true commitment to serving others. My time in Canyon County has instilled in me a deep understanding of the needs of our community and a strong dedication to ensuring that every resident and their family is supported with care and understanding, just as I would want for my own.

The three most pressing issues facing the Canyon County Coroner's Office today are driven by rapid population growth, a corresponding increase in caseload, and the risk of investigator burnout. All of which can impact the quality, consistency, and credibility of our work. As our population grows, the number and complexity of death investigations continue to rise. This places significant strain on existing staff, increasing workload demands and the potential for delays, errors, or inconsistent practices. At the same time, the emotional and psychological toll of this work, combined with long hours and high expectations, creates a real risk of burnout, which can lead to turnover, loss of experience, and reduced effectiveness. To address these challenges, I propose a multi-faceted approach focused on sustainability, efficiency, and quality. First, we must strategically expand and structure our workforce. This includes implementing a tiered staffing model that ensures highly trained investigators are focused on complex cases, while trained support staff handle administrative and routine responsibilities. This allows us to use our resources more efficiently without compromising investigative standards. Second, improving workflow efficiency is critical. By standardizing protocols, implementing case triage systems, and leveraging technology such as an effective case management system, we can reduce unnecessary administrative burden and allow investigators to focus on critical decision making in the field. Third, maintaining credibility and quality must remain a top priority. This can be achieved through ongoing training, professional certification, and regular peer review of cases to ensure consistency and accuracy. Equally important is addressing investigator wellbeing. Preventing burnout requires manageable caseload expectations, improved shift scheduling, access to mental health resources, and fostering a workplace culture that values and supports its staff. Retaining experienced investigators is essential to maintaining institutional knowledge and high standards of practice. Finally, strengthening collaboration with partner agencies such as law enforcement, healthcare providers, and public health. Which can improve information sharing, reduce duplication of effort, and create a more coordinated response system. The challenges we face are significant, but they are manageable with a proactive and structured approach. By investing in our people, improving our systems, and maintaining a strong commitment to quality, we can continue to provide thorough, professional, and credible medicolegal death investigations for our growing community.

The Coroner’s Office plays a vital role in engaging our community through education, collaboration, and compassionate service. We are actively involved in public awareness efforts, particularly around opioid overdose prevention and emerging public health trends. Through my work on the Child Mortality Review Board, we identify critical patterns and partner with public health agencies to address risks proactively and improve outcomes for our citizens. We also prioritize strong relationships with elected officials, law enforcement, EMS, and public health departments by participating in joint training and ongoing collaboration. This ensures a coordinated, informed response to the complex issues facing our community and strengthens interagency trust and effectiveness. Engagement with the business and education community is equally important. We partner with local high schools and colleges to offer internship opportunities, helping educate and inspire the next generation about careers in public service and medicolegal death investigation. Above all, we are committed to serving families with compassion and respect during their most difficult times. We provide clear communication throughout the investigation process, offer resources for grief support, and follow up when appropriate. Through transparency, outreach, and professionalism, we strive to build trust and remain a responsive, engaged partner to our entire community.

Civil discourse is essential to effective local governance, and it is especially critical in the Coroner’s Office. Our work sits at the intersection of science, law, and public emotion, often involving sensitive and sometimes controversial deaths that can draw significant public attention. In this environment, respectful, fact-based communication is key to maintaining credibility, fostering trust, and ensuring that all parties involved include law enforcement, public health partners, and the community. Together we can work collaboratively and effectively. As County Coroner, I would encourage respectful dialogue by prioritizing transparency and clarity while maintaining the integrity of active investigations. It is important to share accurate, timely information with the public, but equally important to protect details that could compromise an ongoing case. Striking that balance helps build trust and reinforces accountability. I would also emphasize professionalism and empathy in every interaction, recognizing that families and community members are often navigating difficult and emotional circumstances. By focusing on clear communication, mutual respect, and a commitment to facts, we can create an environment where even challenging conversations are handled with integrity and care, ultimately strengthening public confidence in the office and in local government as a whole. In a previous death investigation, I encountered a situation where law enforcement and I initially had differing interpretations of the case. Based on scene context, the investigation was moving in one direction. However, my observations of the decedent’s physical findings suggested an alternative explanation that needed to be considered. Rather than approaching this disagreement as a conflict, I focused on maintaining open and respectful communication. I shared my observations clearly, explained the specific evidence on the body that raised questions, and ensured that my concerns were framed in terms of seeking the most accurate determination rather than challenging anyone’s judgement. I also made a point to listed to law enforcement’s perspective and understand the reasoning behind their approach. This allowed us to have a constructive dialogue where both sides could evaluate the full scope of evidence. As a result, additional investigative steps were taken to reconcile the differing viewpoints. This collaborative approach ensured that the final determination was through, evidence based, and credible. This experience reinforced for me the importance of civil discourse. Especially in high stakes situations where respectful communication and shared commitment to facts ultimately lead to better outcomes.

The Nampa Chamber of Commerce and the Coroner’s Office can collaborate in practical, community-focused ways that strengthen both public trust and the local economy. Together, they can promote mental health awareness and substance abuse prevention programs, addressing critical issues affecting community well-being. The Coroner’s Office serves as a valuable source of data regarding causes of death within the community. By sharing relevant statistics, emerging public health threats can be identified and monitored over time. In turn, the Chamber of Commerce can help distribute guidance and educational resources to local businesses and residents, ensuring that the broader community is informed and equipped to respond effectively. This partnership can also support the development of coordinated public awareness campaigns, as well as the creation of support networks for families experiencing unexpected loss. Additionally, both organizations can advocate for resources and services that better serve the public, ultimately contributing to a safer, healthier, and more resilient community.
